EXPERT-LED CONSULTANCY · CONCEPT CASE STUDY
Mara
Venn
Make the idea impossible to misunderstand.
A senior expert brand designed to make the commercial value of the expertise clearer, more credible and easier to buy.
Mara Venn is a fictional executive communication and influence strategist created as a concept case study. It exists to demonstrate NWD’s approach to expert-led brands — not to represent a real client.

01 — The situation
The work was sophisticated. The digital presence was not.
Mara Venn has built her practice through experience, referrals and repeat work.
Her clients are founders, managing directors and senior executives navigating moments where the idea is important, the audience is senior and the cost of being misunderstood is high.
The work itself is sophisticated. The digital presence was not.
Her existing website read more like an online résumé than a commercial brand.
It explained who Mara is, listed experience and described services — but it didn’t explain the situations in which a senior client should bring her in.
02 — The diagnosis
The credibility was buried.
The problem wasn’t lack of credibility. The credibility was buried.
The original positioning placed too much emphasis on biography and not enough on commercial relevance.
Mara was being presented as a communication consultant — a category broad enough to include presentation training, copywriting, public speaking coaching and internal communications.
Her actual value is more specific: she helps senior people clarify consequential ideas and communicate them in a way that moves an audience.

03 — Strategic positioning
Make the idea impossible to misunderstand.
The brand was repositioned around the moment a client needs Mara.
The core proposition — Make the idea impossible to misunderstand — communicates the outcome rather than the service.
The supporting line — strategic communication for leaders with something consequential to say — establishes who the work is for, when it becomes valuable and what the client is seeking.
The positioning deliberately avoids coaching language.
Mara is presented as someone helping leaders make better arguments.
04 — Core idea
The work begins before the presentation.
The work begins before the presentation.
Before the speech.
Before the article.
Before the slide deck.
The real question is:
What must the audience understand, believe or do?
That becomes the organising principle behind the brand.
05 — Visual identity
A senior expert brand, not a lifestyle personal brand.
The identity is designed to feel like a senior expert brand rather than a lifestyle personal brand.
The name itself carries the identity: MARA VENN.
The wordmark is spacious and editorial.
A compact MV monogram supports smaller applications.
The visual system is built around typography, editorial hierarchy, margin space, restrained rules, quotation devices, annotations and structured page systems.
06 — Colour + typography
Deep aubergine, ink and warm ivory.
The palette combines deep aubergine and ink with muted plum, cobalt, warm grey, soft stone and warm ivory.
Cobalt acts as the primary digital accent across links, buttons and selected highlights.
A high-character serif is used for headlines, essays, major statements and pull quotes.
A modern sans serif is used for body copy, navigation and UI.
07 — Photography
Editorial portraiture.
Photography is treated as editorial portraiture.
The objective is to make Mara feel senior and human without falling into standard personal-brand photography.
The direction uses strong directional light, controlled interiors, warm materials, books, notebooks, dark tailoring and architectural backgrounds.
The founder portrait is a commercial signal.
The visitor immediately understands that the expertise sits with one person.

08 — Website
A website designed as an argument.
The website is designed as an argument rather than a biography.
The homepage opens with the proposition and establishes the role immediately.
The structure follows the client decision: the problem, Mara’s approach, service areas, thought leadership, speaking and contact.
The site does not follow the conventional personal-brand sequence of about me → my story → my services → contact.

07 — Thought leadership
The Argument.
A recurring thought-leadership series is created under the title The Argument.
The system gives Mara a structured way to publish ideas without each piece requiring a completely new visual direction.
The system includes article covers, essay layouts, social excerpts, quote cards, checklists, frameworks, tablet reading layouts and downloadable PDFs.
08 — Presentation system
Ideas worth sharing. Delivered with impact.
Presentations are a core part of the fictional business, so the presentation system becomes a major brand application.
The system includes strategic narrative decks, executive communication frameworks, keynote development, speaker notes, presentation outlines and message matrices.
The design feels more like a considered publication than a standard corporate presentation template.

09 — Outcome
Personal without feeling small.
No fabricated revenue, enquiry or audience-growth metrics are attached to this project.
The demonstrated outcome is the creation of a complete commercial system for an independent expert.
The concept moves the business from a biography-led personal brand to a clearly positioned strategic consultancy built around one recognised expert.
The result is a brand that feels personal without feeling small.
